The Best Affordable Sustainable Clothing Brands of 2023

0

Whilst the fashion industry is one of the most polluting in the world, thankfully consumer demand for ethical and eco-friendly clothing is on a huge rise, and continuing ever year! With increased awareness around issues like climate change and workers’ rights, more people want to make sustainable choices with their wardrobes. However, sustainable fashion often comes with a higher price tag, leaving budget-conscious shoppers wondering where to find affordable sustainable options. The good news is there are now plenty of brands offering sustainable style while keeping costs low.

Consider Cost-per-Wear

It’s also good to understand the value of Cost Per Wear, where high-quality well-made sustainable fashion pieces give us much more ‘bang for the buck’ than the poorly made throwaway fast fashion equivalents (see: Why Is Sustainable Fashion Usually More Expensive?). In this post, we’ll shine a spotlight on some of the best affordable sustainable clothing brands to know in 2023.

Sustainable Fabrics

First, it helps to understand what makes clothing truly sustainable. Sustainable fabrics include organic cotton*, hemp, linen, recycled polyester (no virgin polyester), and TENCEL™. *You’ll be glad to know that 100% of the virgin/new cotton found in products on Veo is organic- or it’s recycled, pre or post-consumer cotton- which means it’s the most eco-friendly! 🙏

Fair & Ethical Production

Sustainable manufacturing practices include using renewable energy, treating workers fairly, and minimising waste. Brands focused on sustainability aim for full supply chain transparency and often partner with 3rd-party auditors like B Corp (Veo is a top 5% ranked B Corp!). When shopping, look for information on a brand’s practices and materials to ensure you’re getting quality ethical pieces.

For some sustainable affordable clothing and budget basics, we’ve included some of our best brands below…

Behind The Brand: Syllucid

0

The ongoing e-waste crisis is an issue rooted in modern living. Whilst technology has improved our livelihoods in countless way, it’s also had a knock-on effect on our planet. As technology is cemented as a modern essential, it’s vital that we are conscious about what are devices are made from and how they’re discarded after use, even when it comes to something as humble as a charger.

According to the European Parliament, unused and discarded chargers add up to about 11,000 metric tons of e-waste in Europe annually (The Verge, 2022)!

Syllucid, offer a simple yet profound solution. One USB Cable for all devices, that charges everything while prioritising sustainability. From using recycled minerals to designing for longevity, Syllucid reduces energy consumption, raw material usage, and emissions. Join us as we get to know better the brand and this huge win for the future of sustainable tech…

What’s the inspiration and story behind your brand?

Co-founders of Syllucid – Andrew Appleby and Fabian Hühne

The idea for better USB cables came to life in 2020 when founders Andrew Appleby and Fabian Hühne — who met working at Fairphone — became frustrated with the damaging electronics in unloved segments of the industry, like poor quality cables that break easily. The longer electronics work and the more recycled and fairly sourced materials, the better they are for people and the planet.

Syllucid is dedicated to producing fair, sustainable and long-lasting electronic products. We started this company to give consumers responsible alternatives, to show the true cost of electronic products on the planet, and to work towards reforming our industry.

Our products are a magnifying glass on the electronics industry. By researching their supply chains, they show us what challenges the industry is facing and how they can be solved.

There are serious labour and human rights issues in consumer electronics supply chains with unfair pay and unsafe conditions for miners and workers.

Plus consumer tech has high emissions contributing to global warming, environmental destruction in supply chains and short product cycles creating e-waste and increased demand for raw materials.

Our work is creating change from the inside out, as an example and creating change in the supply chain. We are working with industry partners, sales partners and manufacturing partners to transform the supply chain. For example, we created the first cable to support Fairtrade Gold.

How does your brand mission align with current cultural movements and societal needs?

The world is facing a real climate crisis induced by excessive industrial activity. Sadly, the electronics industry has a large carbon footprint and a damaging impact on the environment, from metal mining from the earth for production through to electronic waste in landfill.

At the same time, our appetite for electronic devices is putting pressure on the planet. With nearly 7 billion smartphone users in 2023, there will always be a demand for new technology. It’s crucial that we improve the way we mine metals, use recycled metals and recycle our tech to reduce environmental damage. More and more, people are choosing to shop based on brands that are doing good, with a particular focus on fashion and food. But the electronics industry has less visibility. So we’re raising awareness to help people choose better electronics.

Have your brand mission and values evolved at all since you first launched?

Our values have held true since we first began. Our mission is to create a world where economic, social and environmental aspects can sustainably coexist and flourish. We encourage conscious production and consumption through trust, transparency, accountability and innovation. That’s where the name Syllucid comes from: Syl (together with) + lucid (understanding and transparency).

That means creating meaningful, impactful and positive change by giving people the power to make a difference and being the leading manufacturer of responsible and sustainable electronic products. We want to become the Patagonia of consumer tech.

Have there been any defining moments or turning points in your brand’s journey so far?

Product launches have been turning points because so much work goes on behind the scenes to develop a more fair and sustainable product with manufacturers. From recycled materials to durable design details, our USB cables are made with the utmost care.

One milestone was the launch of our flagship cable – a modular option so you can charge all devices with one cable – the Syllucid All-in-one crowdfunding campaign where we raised nearly €30k. We’re currently launching our Origin Range, which is an affordable charging cable for people and planet, and will be available to buy very soon.

As you’re on Veo, we know that you’re an ethical and 100% vegan-friendly business. Could you expand more upon the sustainable practices and initiatives you prioritise and implement?

A charging cable has many parts, meaning it has a much more complex supply chain than, say, chocolate. Our focus is on responsible sourcing, recycled materials and durable design because we believe in a world where electronics are made with care for the environment and are fair and safe to the people in the supply chain.

Five ways we make our tech more sustainable and fair:

♻️ Recycled materials

Using recycled materials saves carbon emissions and the earth’s natural resources. Recycling materials like plastic and aluminium, and using circular design practices reduces e-waste, environmental damage from mining metals and CO2 emissions. Plus our cables are easier to recycle, too. Our circular materials reduce CO₂ pollution by approximately 80% compared to new-material cables. All Origin cables are made responsibly in a carbon neutral certified factory.

🌎  Fair minerals

By using conflict-free tin solder wire and integrating Fairtrade Gold to the supply chain, our charging cables don’t contribute to war. It also means gold miners have more safe work, fair pay and can build a secure future for themselves, their families and communities, as well as protect their local environment.

💪🏼 Designed to last

The longer your electronics work, the less e-waste and resources used, the better for the planet. High quality, durable materials and design practices like adding bend protectors, woven braiding, thicker conductor wires and 10k bends ensure the charging cables break less and work for as long as possible. Our Origin cables come with a 5-year warranty so you can keep it for a long time, save money and reduce e-waste.

🌱 Regenerating nature

We are investing in an agroforestry project in the Peruvian Amazon with PUR Project. Re-forestry helps to heal an ecosystem that is being devastated by mining and provides an income to local farmers, taking a holistic approach to making supply chains fairer and more sustainable. 5% of profits from every cable are donated to agroforestry in the Peruvian Amazon where it is particularly affected by illegal deforestation for gold mining. Our partner PUR supports cocoa and coffee farmers in Peru.

💡 Design innovation

How can we improve how we use charging cables? One way is modularity with one single USB cable to charge all your devices with universal and swappable magnetic connectors. This reduces the number of cables needed, and overall impact on the planet.

Have you faced any challenges or obstacles in becoming sustainable and if so, how did you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges was finding suppliers and manufacturers who share the same vision to make tech in a sustainable way. We work closely with our industry partners like Stannol to improve production and our CEO Andy went to visit our factories and tech fairs in Shanghai recently where our cables are made responsibly.

How do you plan to improve upon your sustainability and evolve the brand story in the future?

We believe in the power of an ethical electronics industry. We are reforming our industry from within by raising awareness, creating best practice examples and motivating industry peers to follow our charge. In doing so, we work towards making greater accountability, more sustainable materials, better working conditions, fairer pay and durable products the norm. We make progress with every product. And we will continue to grow our range in the coming years so stay tuned, tell your friends and thank you for supporting our small business with a big vision!

Power up your sustainability game with future-proof charging solutions from Syllucid.

Fashion Revolution Week: There Is No Sustainability Without Human Rights

0

On April 24th 2013, a garment factory building in Bangladesh collapsed, killing over 1,100 people and injuring thousands more. Most of the victims were women who were working long hours for very little pay.

The collapse was not an accident, but rather the result of gross negligence and disregard for worker safety. The building was known to be structurally unsound, yet factory owners forced their workers to continue working in dangerous conditions. The disaster threw into the global spotlight a need for better working conditions and fair wages for the millions of workers who are exploited in the global fashion industry.

On the 10 year anniversary of the disaster, it remains the deadliest garment factory disaster to date. There is much to be said for what action has taken place following the tragedy, but there is still huge amount of work to be done.

A Fashion Revolution was born

In the wake of the disaster emerged an overdue and vital beacon of hope. Fashion Revolution was founded by Carry Somers and Orsola de Castro, who believe that Rana Plaza was a wake-up call for the fashion industry to take responsibility for the impact of its actions and to ensure that workers throughout the supply chain are treated fairly and with dignity.

The movement encourages consumers to ask brands a simple but important question. “Who made my clothes?”. This question aims to demand greater transparency in the fashion industry and has had a huge global reach via social media campaigns and activism. Today, Fashion Revolution has grown to become a global campaign, with events and activities in over 100 countries around the world.

So, who did make your clothes?

The annual Fashion Revolution Week campaign runs from 22nd – 29th April, bringing together the world’s largest fashion activism movement for seven days of action to remind us that no human life should be put at risk for fashion. Not then. Not now. Not ever. Behind the clothes we wear, there’s a person (often several), who has a name, livelihood, a desire for wellbeing and the the right to safe work.

The current global fashion system is still unsafe for millions of garment workers. Every day, people in the fashion industry are being exploited for profit. Sometimes closer to home than you think. Many believe that exploitation happen far overseas, but it still happens right here in the UK too.

Only a few years back, the Leicester Boohoo factory scandal came to national attention via mainstream news. It was a harrowing reminder that many large brands still abuse their positions of power and purposefully keep consumers in the dark about their supply chains.

Asking the simple question, “Who made my clothes?”, reminds us that behind every garment, is the story of at least one but often multiple lives.

Transparency is truth. The truth is power.

Unfortunately, a lack of transparency is not an issue that’s unique to the fashion industry. But fashion is perhaps the most notorious. That’s why it’s crucial to demand transparency when it comes to who makes the clothes we wear and the goods we buy and use.

By knowing where our clothes come from, we can make informed decisions about the brands we support and the impact our choices have on the world. When we buy from companies that prioritise sustainability and ethical production practices, we’re sending a message that we value transparency, accountability, and a better future for all. Let’s work together to create a fashion industry that’s truly sustainable and equitable for everyone involved.

Behind The Brand: Bee & Alpaca

0

The fashion industry is responsible for a staggering amount of global greenhouse gas emissions. Bee & Alpaca want to prove that it can be better. Whether that’s by reducing impact at each stage of their garments’ lifecycle or encouraging customers to choose well and buy less, they’re serious about doing the right thing.

On a mission to seamlessly marry sustainable practices with great style, Bee & Alpaca open up to Veo about their brand story, the importance of limited design and re-imagining broken waste-based systems for the better.

What is the inspiration and story behind the creation of your brand?

Our founder had no idea how much waste the fashion industry is responsible for until he walked through a textile factory and saw whole rolls of fabric discarded due to minor imperfections, small colour issues etc. Alongside harming the environment, the situation seemed unfair to the suppliers who created the material, only to end up with nothing but mounting waste. He started to research possible solutions, and that was the first time he came across the term ‘deadstock’ or even thought about starting a fashion company.

Around the same time as the team was imaging the brand, the global pandemic hit. We saw how these factories were struggling under cancelled orders and waste management, so it made sense to launch Bee & Alpaca as soon as possible to help both the manufacturers and the environment. Despite personal and global struggles during such a difficult time, we managed to help others and create something beautiful.

Even now, many of these factories are still struggling with their recycling capacity and waste management, so we continue to have a positive impact.

How does your brand mission align with current cultural movements and societal needs?

Fashion desperately needs innovative solutions to its wasteful practices. On a global level, it’s estimated that 15% of global fabric production is discarded as deadstock (dezwijger.nl). By turning this discarded fabric into something beautiful and unique, we can work towards a circular fashion industry where waste is cut out completely!

At the same time, consumers are becoming more environmentally aware of overconsumption, with 97% of consumers saying they want to be more sustainable (Kantar). Social media and fast fashion have trapped consumers into wearing the same styles to be ‘on trend’, but more and more of us are tiring of the trend cycle and looking for an ethical alternative. Limited collections can offer shoppers a unique design at a similar price to fast fashion whilst still being sustainable – which is excellent news for deadstock brands like ours, where smaller collections can be a natural outcome of working with existing fabrics.

Of course, we know that realistically we can’t fix all of fast fashion’s issues – our goal is to save as much fabric from landfill as possible and work towards sustainability in all other aspects of the business.

Have your brand mission and values evolved at all since you first launched?

In broad terms, no – since launching last year, our mission and values have constantly been at the front of our minds when making decisions for the brand, and we’ve received a lot of positive feedback on our ethical ethos. From the beginning, we’ve focused on reimagining deadstock – taking one of the industry’s worst-kept secrets and turning it into something not only functional but beautiful. We’re proud of our hard work, but as the industry (hopefully) becomes more sustainable in the future, we’re prepared to grow and change our mission to reflect the changing landscape.

Have there been any defining moments or turning points in your brand’s journey so far?

Launching the brand last year was a steep learning curve, and we’ve loved every minute! Highlights include announcing our first collection, beginning to expand to the US and creating our biggest release to date – which was still only a few hundred items.

Recently, we’ve switched focus from just marketing direct to consumer and started exploring B2B, showcasing at trade shows like Just Around the Corner. Who knows where else this year will take us!

Could you share any testimonials, features or recognition that particularly showcase your brand and its impact?

We’re excited to be featured in the ethical blog Curiously Conscious’ list under Affordable Sustainable Fashion Brands. The website is run by sustainable and ethical influencer Besma (@besmacc), one of the most prominent voices in the UK’s sustainable fashion space – which is why a recommendation from her meant so much!

We’ve also worked closely with Lydia Cooke (@lydia_cooke), a sustainable influencer and freelance model who embodies the brand’s values and aesthetic. Speaking to her Instagram community, she praised Bee & Alpaca’s ethos: “obsessed with the mission of this awesome brand.” Her followers seemed to agree that the partnership is perfect, with one commenting in a tagged post, “(@_r_mcgrath): I love that you posted a sustainable upcycle clothes brand that’s actually affordable and similar prices to fast fashion brands too!!! 👏”

Additionally, within months of launching, we were featured in Fashion United, and we received a lot of positive feedback for our honest answers from our co-founder Deniz about the business’s ethos and practices.

As you’re featured on Veo, we know that you’re an ethical and 100% vegan-friendly business. Could you expand more upon the sustainable practices and initiatives you prioritise and implement?

Alongside using deadstock fabric, we aim to be as sustainable as possible throughout the rest of the business. We reduce waste in our design process as much as possible by: restricting samples to a single prototype of one colour and size with minimal revisions; using direct print technology where possible to minimise water waste compared to traditional dyeing methods; offsetting 100% of our emissions via carbon certificates.

We do not believe in mass production or trend cycles at Bee & Alpaca. Our clothes are designed to be as unique, timeless and ‘seasonless’ as possible to ensure maximum wear and longevity. We also encourage our customers to use what they have whenever possible, reminding them that the most sustainable garment is the one they already own.

Outside of our design process, our sustainability efforts include cutting back on unnecessary packaging and utilising biodegradable shipping bags and recyclable tags/labels to cut down on waste. We also promise to plant a tree for every order we ship, helping our customers do their part to combat climate change.

We are committed to being as transparent as possible with our customers, encouraging them to learn more about our sustainability commitments and engage in an open conversation about what we can all do to help the environment. This includes sharing information about our packaging, design process, emissions, and suppliers.

We also use our blog to educate our customers about different sustainability topics, such as a circular fashion economy and fashion’s water waste problem.

Have you faced any challenges or obstacles in becoming sustainable and if so, how did you overcome them?

When we first imagined the brand, we discussed whether or not the business would use only organic fabric deadstock, because fabrics like Polyester are seen as a no-no in the sustainable fashion industry. Initially we thought yes, but quickly realised that the fabric we snubbed would end up in a landfill, which was much more likely to harm the environment than if we upcycled it. We were determined to save as much fabric as possible, so we decided that we wouldn’t choose fabric based on traditional labels like ‘sustainable’ or ‘not sustainable’ – if it could be saved and reworked, then we wanted it. Thus our slogan, “No fabric is more sustainable than that already produced,” was born.

How do you plan to improve upon your sustainability and evolve the brand story in the future?

As we keep growing and learning as a brand, we hope to imagine more and more ways to fix fashion’s waste problem and bring our community on this journey with us. We’re constantly listening to what our customers want, not only for valuable feedback but also to predict stock levels and cut down on unnecessary waste – we’ll continue to work on this as the business expands.

We want to remain as transparent as possible with our community, so we’d love to bring out an impact report in our first few years to help measure and improve our impact. Although there are no concrete plans right now, we have our sights set on eventually becoming B-Corp certified.

Anti-pollution skincare saviours

0

From skin cycling to slugging, maintaining healthy skin is serious business! And while we’re sure you’ve probably got your exfoliate, retinol, recovery, and repeat routine down to a science, there’s one external factor you might not have considered: air pollution.

According to the World Health Organisation, air pollution is now considered to be the world’s largest environmental health risk, with levels here in the UK far exceeding the recommended air quality levels needed for a healthy lifestyle.

With harmful toxins being both inhaled and absorbed through the skin, prolonged exposure to air pollutants can wreak havoc not only on our respiratory health but our skin too, causing a range of issues including premature ageing, sensitivity, inflammatory flare-ups, and more!

Introducing, anti-pollution skincare! These skin saviours protect against pollutants and deeply cleanse the skin using active natural ingredients.

So how exactly does anti-pollution skincare work?

Antioxidant-rich formulas containing Vitamins A, C or E work to protect and defend your skin from free radicals that can form as a result of chemical reactions on the skin which can cause premature ageing and dullness. Other formulas which contain activated charcoal, algae, kelp, or even green tea can help to ‘detox the skin’, drawing out toxins and impurities.

What are the best anti-pollution skincare products for cleansing, protecting, and detoxing?

NEW IN: Sustainable Women’s Fashion

Discover new season womenswear, done sustainably of course, with timeless style essentials and transeasonal hero pieces to help you complete your capsule wardrobe or integrate seamlessly into your existing wardrobe.

Eat the rainbow. Wear a rainbow.

For those slow Sunday mornings wandering around the local farmers market, running those weekly errands in style or gentle strolls (or jogs) in the sunshine, our ethical basics and stylish activewear pieces are the go-to pieces for the perfect blend of comfort and put-together.

The office fashion icon

Deciding what to wear for work everyday can be a pain (especially when you don’t have a set uniform). Finding the perfect balance between fashionable and professional, practical and comfortable, can seem daunting. But it needn’t be. The secret to bossing your work outfits is to source timeless and versatile pieces that can be restyled over and over. Top tip: layering is your best friend. During that stage where it’s cold when you leave for work but roasting by the middle of the day, a well layered outfit will allow you to adjust to remain conformable.

Brunches and coffee dates

Now who doesn’t love a girl’s brunch or impromptu coffee date? For stylish pieces that can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion, minimalist staples and classic silhouettes with a fun and unexpected twist are the way to go. Whether opting for recycled patch mom jeans or a body hugging bodycon, thoughtful accessories can customise even the most staple of pieces. Even the most quintessential British accessory, the humble umbrella, can add intrigue to your outfit thanks to Duckhead’s range of fun patterns and colours.

Rosey hues at sunset

Warm spring and hot summer nights has us rejoicing once more at the eagerly anticipated prospect of wining and dining in the sunshine. Nothing epitomises summer quite like an alfresco feast washed down with a refreshing glass of summer rosé. For hues that encapsulate the sunset, tans and pinks are your best friend. For silhouettes, think light and flowy, like a summer breeze, but don’t be afraid to pair with sturdy jackets, chunky jewellery and statement bags to anchor and add contrast to your look.

NEW IN: Ethical Men’s Fashion

Turn up the heat with spring/summer must-haves to take you through the season in style. From laid-back organic cotton tees and statement sunglasses to up-cycled trainers and stylish surf shorts, shop summer essentials that are perfect for every occasion. Whether it’s a staycation by the seaside or a tropical trip abroad, we’ve got everything you’ll need for these warmer months.

Give your wardrobe a new season upgrade with our curated selection of timeless menswear classics; from ethically made denim and organic cotton basics to vegan leather jackets, shoes and accessories.

Loungewear for a chill day at home

Whether you’re working from home or having a much needed quiet day in, comfort is absolutely key. We spend a lot of time in loungewear so even if may not be working the hardest, our loungewear certainly should.

Get out in nature, with nature in mind

Exploring the best of the British countryside just hits different in Spring and Summer. Get outdoors and discover just what nature has to offer in attire that’s fit for purpose but still looks good.

Streetwear staples with a contemporary twist

Stepping out into the bustling streets to hit up some vintage and antique stores has to be one of life’s simple but great pleasures. For your day out hitting all your favourite spots in the city, discover streetwear with a contemporary twist. Whether it’s a bomber jacket in suede or deadstock trousers with a unique crinkle texture, you’ll be able to channel you inner creativity and make the most of your urban exploring.

Sharp, tailored and effortless for the beer garden

Does a pint ever taste better than in the fresh outdoors with the sun basking down? We think it’s pretty hard to beat. Whether you’re out for casual drinks or celebrating a special occasion, hit the beer gardens in an outfit that’s sharp and effortless.

Tips for curating your perfect wardrobe for all year around

1. Apply the #Wear30Challenge

Don’t buy a new piece unless you intend to wear at least 30 times. We’ve previously spoken about the economical benefit of investing in high quality sustainable pieces over fast fashion, but the environmental reasons are just as (if not more) important! Wearing something for an extra nine months can reduce its carbon footprint by 20-30% (Keep Britain Tidy)!

2. Think capsule!

A minimalistic capsule wardrobe might not work for everyone. But we can all draw inspiration from its core principles. Building a wardrobe of timeless staples that are versatile across the seasons, is a great way to prevent impulsive purchases and unnecessary overconsumption. When buying something new, look at what’s in your wardrobe. Does the piece compliment what you already own? Can you wear it in different ways?

3. Don’t make aftercare an afterthought

Despite often being an afterthought, aftercare is hugely important in when it comes to looking after our clothes. Be sure to read your clothing labels carefully to ensure you maximise your garment’s lifespan.

4. Part with old clothes responsibly

If you’re parting ways with old clothes ready for the new season, because you no longer wear them or they’re no longer wearable, be sure to do so responsibly. At Veo, we strive to be advocates of building a circular economy. Donate your clothes to charity, sell them on a secondhand platform like eBay, pass them onto someone you know if they might like them or drop them off at a textiles recycling centre.

5. Support independent brands

Supporting independent brands at Veo means that you’re getting the highest quality products, unique styles that you won’t find on the highstreet and contributing to a fairer fashion future, and in turn, a healthier planet. All of our brands share our passion for a kind, sustainable and healthy future for all and this is reflected in their business operations, practices and products.
