We all know sleep is essential for overall mental and physical wellbeing and a good bedtime routine can help you get the best rest possible. Small nightly habits can have a big impact and really help us to unwind, relax and sleep deep. This even includes the type of pyjama’s we wear. 💤
In line with World Mental Health Day 2023, we caught up with Nina, the founder of ethical sleepwear brand Nightire, to discuss all things sleep, wellbeing, sustainability and more.
What led you to create an ethical sleepwear brand, and how does it connect with your mission of promoting better mental health through sleep?
When I moved to The Big Smoke from South Africa a few years ago, I started – thanks in large part to stressful days as a Brand Manager for a start-up soft drinks brand – to struggle with sleep. Which is when I did a whole bunch of research into the topic of sleep and picked up on a really interesting tidbit – that you can fall asleep faster and stay in a deep sleep easier if your body temperature is controlled, and a great way to do this is by wearing the right sleepwear and using the right bedding. “Right” meaning made of fabric that helps your body stay comfortable throughout the night as your body temps change. This, in turn, got me to focus on an industry that I felt had a LOT of room for innovation, which is where the idea for a functional sleep brand came about.
And that’s how I started Nightire – a range that’s made entirely of organic bamboo – a fabric that is vegan, eco friendly and super soft, but most importantly regulates your body temperature for more comfortable sleeps (a real game-changer during monthly hormonal changes and seasonal shifts). PLUS bamboo is kind to skin and easy to care for too.
Sleep and mental health are inextricably linked. You cannot have a strong mental state if you’re underslept – the science has proven this time and again, but really, anyone who has had a bad night’s sleep can attest to how rubbish you feel mentally, physically and emotionally the next day. Tackling bad sleeps, to me, meant championing a strong mind.
Can you tell us about the design and materials you’ve chosen for your sleepwear? How do these choices contribute to a more comfortable and restful night’s sleep, and how does this align with your commitment to ethical practices?
As mentioned, all Nightire sleepwear, sleep accessories and bedding are made of 100% organic bamboo fabric. It’s a wonderfully soft material that helps to regulate your body temps while wearing – a game changer for sleep especially if you suffer from hot flushes or night sweats. And as women, we all go through these body temp changes even monthly, or during and after pregnancy, or when menopause hit. It’s also really important to wear sleepwear that is cut with plenty room to breathe, which is why I have designed all the styles to be roomy for ultimate relaxing.
We often hear about the importance of sleep for mental health. How does your brand raise awareness about the link between sleep quality and mental well-being?
Nightire was created for the sole purpose of helping folks to sleep better – through the products but also through the content that I put out on social, newsletters, blog posts etc. A lot of my content circles around the link between sleep quality and mental wellbeing, and I’ve even written a sleep book to drive the purpose home (this was my lockdown project and an e-book that any shopper at Nightire will receive for free to download with purchase). In the book, I share tried and tested tips on how to sleep better through everything from yoga poses to do before bed, scents and foods that can calm the nervous system, a bedroom aesthetic that gives you all the relaxed feels, and how to set up your day to work best with your own circadian rhythm.
Your brand places a strong emphasis on sustainability and ethical production. How do these values fit into your broader goal of supporting mental health through improved sleep?
Another reason for my choice of fabric in the form of bamboo, was for its sustainability props. The bamboo plant grows quickly and without much need for water, it doesn’t strip the soil when harvested and is vegan too. Nightire is a slow fashion brand, where everything is small batch made, slowly (literally, it takes me months to produce a small batch of stock). The idea of slowing down – for sleep and for life in general – of supporting brands who share this ethos, is woven into the fabric of Nightire’s bedtime fashion.
Do you have any stories or examples of customers who have seen a positive impact on their mental wellbeing after using your sleepwear? In your view, how does sleepwear play a role in fostering better mental health overall?
I’ve had many supporters of Nightire get in touch to rave about how much more comfortable they are at night since wearing the PJs, how their night-sweats are a thing of the past. And as we now know, if you’re more comfortable at night and sleeping like a log, your mental health will be all the better for it. (Performance) sleepwear can play a key role in bettering your sleep – it’s not a magic pill, so won’t be the one and only tweak that you need to make to your daily routine, your bedtime hygiene and your inner dialogue, but lovely cooling threads worn at a time of the day when you need to feel relaxed, indulgent and comfortable, can go a long way.

DECEM has been three years in the making. Founded by renowned foodie and MasterChef finalist Billy Wright, they set on a journey to discover the optimum spirit ABV. From global regulatory director to sustainable self-care brand founder, Yolanda Wetteland shares her path to founding a sustainable solid body-care brand. Join us as we explore the backstory that led to the creation of her brainchild, trii (pronounced “try”) and how Yolanda’s personal values and life experiences have shaped her into a tenacious individual who values excellence over complacency.
Let’s dive into the backstory a bit. Can you share with us how the brand came to be, and what personal values and life experiences influenced its creation?
Yolanda Wetteland former Global Regulatory Director at Elemis.
As someone who values achieving milestones and conquering obstacles, I have persisted through various personal and professional setbacks despite my unconventional upbringing. Born in Ukraine, raised in Zimbabwe, and now residing in England, I have learned to strive for excellence and celebrate accomplishments rather than settling for the status quo. Moreover, I have recently discovered the importance of prioritising self-care, which inspired me to create trii (pronounced “try”), a sustainable solid body-care brand. I used my expertise to develop a product line that aligns with current values and supports a healthier planet.
I launched trii due to the need for self-care with sustainability and environmental consciousness at its core. However, I have since realised the importance of a good work-life balance. I have come to realise that self-care goes beyond a nurturing bathroom ritual. It is acceptable to log off and go for a walk or reschedule a meeting because you do not have the mental capacity to think. Self-care is not selfish and needs to resonate beyond the bathroom. The last few months have been a rollercoaster with a lot of positive lessons which I will use to develop the brand into one that is seen as the intersection of sustainability and self-care in luxurious solid form, where our customers embrace the self-care message beyond the bathroom.
Can you share with us who inspires you in your work and life?
My mum was such an inspirational woman. She was a single mum who taught me that no one can succeed for me: I must do it for myself. I must have my own story to tell.
What advice would you give to other female founders or women thinking of starting their own business?
Brace yourself, it is not easy. And do not forget your self-care and wellbeing because founding and growing a business can be emotionally and mentally taxing.
As the founder, what is your take on self-care, and how has this been embraced within the brand’s philosophy?
Like so many people who are juggling and leading busy lifestyles, over the last few years I found myself wanting to find time to slow down in all aspects of my life. We don’t all have the luxury to take a morning or an afternoon off here and there, but we can create little moments of ‘me time’ in our daily lives. This became my inspiration behind trii – to create a simple, streamlined, three-step, self-care ritual using a luxurious body cleanser, exfoliator and moisturiser, all in solid form and infused with the most divine scents, designed to trigger your senses and enhance your mood.
From calming Lavender, uplifting Lemongrass, soothing Rose, energising Peppermint and enticing Incense, trii’s solid body care helps transform daily habits, like taking a shower before taking the kids to school, into a self-care ritual.
Could you give us a quick rundown of what your brand stands for?
Made for you. Made for your senses.
trii products are designed to turn daily bathing routines into a self-care ritual harnessing the power of the finest skincare ingredients and scents. Each product has been specifically designed with complementary aromas and textures to work in tandem for optimum physical and sensorial results. This approach differentiates trii and resonates with individuals seeking holistic self-care solutions.
In summary, trii distinguishes itself through our sustainability focus, commitment to ethical values, convenient and travel-friendly products, and our emphasis on elevating the self-care experience for consumers.
Do you have a go-to tip or trick for making the most out of your hero product? Something you’d recommend to anyone using it?

This leaves your skin feeling supple, velvety, and wonderfully rejuvenated. For optimal results, use the exfoliating compact bar three times weekly. The term ‘organic’ exploded onto our scene and lexicon after a public profile surge in the early 2000s. As consumers began to connect the dots between diet, health and environment, the term organic promises a commitment to bettering all three.
Presently, Organic September, a campaign that raises awareness of the many benefits of organic farming and all it produces, is celebrated annually in the UK. This includes everything from fruit and veg to toiletries and clothing. Buying organic helps farms support our biodiversity and wildlife, fight climate change, improve animal welfare and reduce exposure to pesticides.
Organic September was started by the Soil Association, the charity that advocates for organic farming as a way to care for the natural world. You’ll probably agree, this all sounds great, but what does it mean?
What does ‘organic’ actually mean?
Organic is defined as a system of farming and food production that aims to produce sufficient quantities of high-quality food. Organic farmers do this by working to a strict set of standards, ensuring that their methods maintain the health of the local ecosystems and people who live within them. The result is a system that benefits both plants and the wider planet. According to the Soil Association, ‘It means higher levels of animal welfare, lower levels of pesticides, no manufactured herbicides or artificial fertilisers.’
However, organic goods are no longer merely refined to the food and drink that we consume (although that does play a big part). Organic farming and production plays a part in a lot of the different types of products we consume in relation to all the different departments that we boast on our own platform. That’s right, fashion, homeware, beauty, health & wellness, and good ol’ food and drink are all areas where we can increasingly opt for organic as consumers.
Why is organic better?
Perhaps most prominently, organic farming and growing is better for the environment. Overuse of chemical fertilisers and pesticides has caused a decline of our pollinators. Although sometimes small in size, the role insects and wildlife play in maintaining biodiversity and our planets delicate ecosystem is huge. Therefore, protecting them is paramount for maintaining a healthy and balanced ecosystem.
Switching to organic helps to ensure that toxic chemicals are kept away from insects and wildlife. Organic farming puts an emphasis on high-nutrient soil which is better for creating habitats for bugs and insects. Organic farming is also more energy efficient as its carbon footprint is significantly lower than methods used in intensive agriculture. This also means that organic helps to address the climate crisis.

Having been around for 30 years now, Mildred’s was plant-based way before the days of mainstream veganism and Greggs vegan steak bakes. One of the OG (original) vegan chains, Mildred’s has mastered the art of plant-based cuisine. With a menu that will get your taste buds tingling and a laid-back space in Covent Garden to fill all customers with ease, this is a dinner spot not to be missed.
From the team that brought us Mildred’s, we also have Mallow. Located in the heart of Borough Market, this restaurant focuses on cooking entirely vegan and sustainable. Ingredients are sourced locally, and from small businesses such as the fresh fruit and veg in Borough Market. These seasonal fruits and veggies are then transformed into delicious hearty meals, that are great for the body and soul.
The renowned pizza chain PizzaExpress recently opened its first ever vegan restaurant in Aldwych earlier this year. After great success with trialling a few vegan options such as the Sloppy Vegan and Vegan Giardiniera, the doughball loving owners decided to open an entirely plant-based restaurant. The menu still features many of the same pizzas as the original restaurants, they’re just made with tasty vegan alternatives, proving that going vegan doesn’t mean giving up what we know and love.
Japanese food is not often associated with being vegan, as one of its main components relies on raw fish for flavour and texture. Itadaki Zen has challenged those assumptions and created an incredible Japanese vegan restaurant that is bursting with umami goodness. The menu is small but not limited and captures all the gloriously rich and salty flavours of Japan. With homes in London, Paris, and more, there’s a reason this charming restaurant has gone international.

The restaurant is now closed, and as such removed from our Best of London Vegan guide. We’re unsure of the exact reasons for closing, but were able to find some highly questionable social media activities by Rudy’s Vegan Diner, which Sean O’Callaghan called out in his post ‘How NOT to run a social media account‘ which introduces with “It has not been a good run for Rudy’s Dirty Vegan Diner lately.” Yes we agree, and we’ll leave you to have a read of the post if you fancy. But even without Rudy’s, thankfully there’s 49 more amazing plant-based eateries to choose from! 😄

Chef Mauro and his wife Dr. Min found inspiration in their own mix of cultures that they share and wanted to replicate that in their food.
