When Which? investigated claims that 'buy now, pay later' schemes have impacted shoppers' credit ratings, ClearPay confirmed that:

while it can report on people’s credit files, it has not done so during the four years it has been operating.

Additionally, a Clearpay spokesperson confirmed in a statement:

Clearpay has never enforced a debt through enforcement agents or bailiffs... [we] do not report to credit rating agencies and we never share customer information with aggressive doorstep collectors.

To keep us focused on this mission of empowering customers, ClearPay has 4 guiding principles:

  1. Take it slow - Clearpay takes time to get to know our customers before enabling them to spend more. Sensible initial spending limits are set that increase gradually over time, and ensure our customer’s ability to repay on time.
  2. Keep Clearpay free - There is never any interest or extra charges if payments are made on time. What you see is what you get.
  3. Late payments are bad business - Clearpay will only charge a late fee if customers miss a payment. But first, we will do everything we can to help customers avoid this.
  4. Happy customers make even more happy customers - Everybody wins when customers have a great experience. A big part of that is being committed to responsible spending and keeping our product simple, honest and transparent.
