How many bottles, pots, cans and tubs do you have littering up your bathroom?

Do you manage to get the empties into the recycling?

Only 4 in 10 people admit to recycling from their bathroom, which equates to approximately 30,000 tonnes of recyclable material from bathrooms ending up in landfill in the UK each year.

Fortunately, as the movement for the reduction and removal of plastics in our homes continues to gather pace through 2019, we can see the beauty industry is tackling this challenge head on in many ways, including the development of zero waste beauty products.

What are ‘zero waste products’?

The principle of zero waste products is to ensure that all elements that make them are reusable. They are responsibly produced and packaged, with no elements destined to end up in landfill, incinerators or the oceans, even with recycling, being the absolute last resort.

The benefits of using zero waste products is that not only are you removing the unnecessary waste hitting the rubbish bin, but also the carbon footprint laid down through the recycling process is also getting reduced so making the move to zero waste in your life is a win-win.

Good news

The great news for the likes of you and I, is that with the development of these products, what was once a small niche in the beauty market is now growing quickly as consumer demand increases.

That's why we created Veo, the earth friendly marketplace so we could give brands that create unique, high quality, sustainable products a platform that gives them the exposure they deserve. Helping people like me and you to shop better.

We are seeing many new and exciting companies with innovative products that work, are natural, often vegan friendly, are easier to get hold of and, critically, are good for the environment in every way possible.

So, if you are currently surrounded by all your plastics and are keen to make the change to zero waste beauty products without compromising on quality or your skincare routines, take a peek at three simple products you can easily swap in and soon will not be able to live without.

Solid Shampoo Bars

I think by now we’ve all heard of shampoo bars, they’re gaining a lot of popularity and are very much associated when the term zero waste beauty products are mentioned thanks to the promotion of them on the high street.

Zuzka Natural Beauty, is UK brand producing natural skin and haircare products.

The founder, Susan Kohutiva has over 30 years experience in the health and beauty business so truly knows her stuff.

They have developed several glorious shampoo bars to choose from, Coconut Cream, Sugar Cane (I adore the colour of this one) and Cedar Wood. All organic and all SLS (the science stuff that makes liquid shampoo lather) and paraben free.

The great advantage in switching out from liquid shampoo to a solid shampoo bar is that the ingredients are all developed to ensure they are gentle on your hair, holding in all the natural oils and are good for maintaining coloured hair, which for me is a plus. In addition to this they can help reduce dry scalps, so for my son who suffers from cradle cap, it’s a bonus!

Facemasks

Kind Beeuty is a brand that was founded on the desire to step away from products with excess packaging and unnatural ingredients. Their products are hand crafted in the UK, using only natural ingredients.

Their mantra is also perfect “Return, Refill, Reuse + Repeat”; once you have finished your product, just return your container (for free) and they will clean it and refill and the cycle continues.

Every Sunday evening without fail, I have a bit of a self care session for my skin, a good double cleanse and exfoliation and give it a good long drink with facemasks, oils and moisturisers. I find it key to helping my skin stay healthy as I live in an urban environment where the pollutants can really clog it up.

Kind Beeuty’s Brightening Facemask is perfect for this weekly indulgence.

Firstly, it reduces the number of products you need in your routine, with the inclusion of Gob Tree Leaves which gently exfoliate the skin post cleansing.

This then allows the turmeric to get to work on the pores, drawing out all the nasties that make skin look dull and grey, while keeping the skin calm with its anti inflammatory properties.

It’s so easy to use as well, making it a dream, just pop a 1 teaspoon of the powder into a bowl and mix with 2-3 teaspoons of water or milk if you have dry skin, apply and leave for 10 minutes before removing and you’re left with gorgeous looking skin.

Body Oil

Now it’s only been over the last few years that I have discovered oils and I was a bit nervous to try them over thinking I would end up being an oily, slippery mess. However, I am in love with them and am always on the lookout to try new ones so I urge you to give them a go if you haven’t already and start reaping the benefits that these natural products have.

The Apricot Body Oil from Kind Beeuty is an excellent starting point to kick off your love affair. Packed with a pure blend of ingredients including Olive Oil, Apricot Kernel Oil, Almond Oil, Black Seed Oil, Vitamin E and Lavender Essential Oil, it will get your skin feeling hydrated and nourished in no time at all.

All the oils in the blend have benefits, but the star being the apricot kernel oil, not only contains gamma linoleic acid which can help firm and tone the skin, but it is also packed with Vitamins A and E which are great at slowing the ageing process.

With all that in mind, there is no excuse, ensure you get those empties into a recycling bin, and start discovering your zero waste beauty goodies.
